Routine check-ups and screenings have been one of the big losers of COVID-19, with many Australians avoiding a trip to their GP during the pandemic
Management of Chronic Health Conditions
The Australian Government is urging all people with chronic health conditions to not neglect their regular health care and to continue to see their general practitioner or specialist about the management of their conditions.
Chronic conditions include arthritis, asthma, back pain, cancer, cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes and mental health conditions. These are the leading causes of illness, disability and death in Australia.
Throughout Australia people with chronic diseases are postponing GP consults and other vital diagnoses that may be missed and delayed. These are potentially life-saving check-ups, tests and monitoring that people missing out on.
Your GP is here to Improve your Health
General practice is the first port of call for people when it comes to their health and GPs play a unique role in treating patients with chronic conditions, in addition to treating a range of other conditions and providing preventive medical advice for the whole person.
It’s important that this doesn’t change and that people realise that it’s never been easier to access your GP – online video, by telephone or in person.
Bulk Billed Telehealth
The Australian Government has expanded Medicare-subsidised telehealth services for all Australians and is providing extra incentives to general practitioners to support continued access to essential primary health services during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Telehealth has been taken up by a higher proportion of older Australians, which coincides with the age group more likely to have multiple chronic health conditions.
