With so much information accessible to expectant parents, determining what is most essential is difficult. All of the varied methods to a healthy pregnancy can make expectant mothers second-guess their decisions.
Keeping yourself and baby healthy during pregnancy starts with just 3 simple steps:
Eat nutritious food to help your baby develop; try to have a healthy diet with a balanced nutritional value. Remember that eating for two in pregnancy is actually a myth! In the 2nd and 3rd trimesters you may need some extra food to provide nutrients for the growth of your baby. A little more vegetables, lean protein and wholegrains each day is all you’ll need!
Avoid alcohol and limit high-fat and sugary food and drinks.
2. Regular Exercise
Have regular physical activity will help the development of the baby and to prepare your body for labor and recovery. Aim for 30-60 minutes each day and start slowly. Always listen to your body and be sure to have plenty of rest.
Walking and light resistance exercises like pilates, yoga, prenatal physio classes and swimming are excellent choices.
3. Build a Support Network
Do not hesitate to reach out if you need support. This may be in the form of partners, family, friends, neighbours or community groups. Attend healthcare check-ups and contact your GP for further pregnancy advice.
If you’re feeling low for more than a few days, talk to your healthcare professional who will be able to help or refer you to someone who can.
Enjoy the Journey
Pregnancy is like a rollercoaster journey and a new experience for expectant mothers. Enjoy the journey and take care of yourself so that you can provide the best possible start in life for your child.
